Calamondin: Citrus Mitis

Citrus mitis, commonly known as Calamondin, is a hybrid citrus belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is believed to be the result of a cross between tangerine (Citrus reticulata) and kumquat (Fortunella). Native to Southeast Asia, it is widely cultivated throughout the region and other parts of the world both for its fruit and for ornamental purposes.

Size

The calamondin is a small tree or shrub that can reach a height of 3-6 meters. Its leaves are green, glossy and aromatic, with an oval, pointed shape. The flowers, white and fragrant, are similar to those of other citrus fruits and often bloom throughout the year.

Fruit

The fruit is small, spherical or slightly oval, about 2-4 cm in diameter. The skin is thin, smooth and bright orange when ripe. The flesh is juicy and very acidic, with a flavor that mixes notes of lemon and tangerine. The fruit can be eaten whole, as the skin is also sweet and edible.

Trivia

For a long time, the squid was considered inedible because of its very sour taste. However, today it is appreciated not only as an ornamental plant for its abundant fruiting, but also in cooking, for making jams and for the use of its juice.
The calamondin finds good demand during the holiday season, when its vibrant coloration and unique flavor are especially appreciated.
